Protect Your Wood This Monsoon Season
The Indian monsoon brings welcome relief from the summer heat — but for your wooden furniture, it is the most challenging time of year. High humidity, dampness, and fluctuating temperatures cause wood to expand, warp, crack, and develop mould if not properly cared for. The good news? With a few simple precautions, your solid wood furniture can sail through the monsoon season looking as beautiful as ever.
At Bruinhout, we craft all our furniture from solid wood specifically selected and finished for longevity — including through India's intense monsoon months. Here are our expert tips for keeping your wooden furniture in perfect condition during the rains.
1. Keep Furniture Away from Windows and Direct Dampness
The most important monsoon rule: never let your wooden furniture sit in direct contact with rain-splashed surfaces, open windows, or damp walls. Even brief exposure to moisture can cause wood to swell and warp. Move pieces away from windows during heavy rain and ensure no furniture is touching an exterior wall that may be seeping moisture.
2. Maintain Good Air Circulation
Stagnant, humid air is wood's enemy. During the monsoon, keep your home well-ventilated whenever possible — open interior doors, use fans to circulate air, and avoid covering wooden furniture with heavy drapes or covers that trap moisture. If your home stays closed for extended periods, consider a dehumidifier for rooms with significant wooden furniture.
3. Re-Oil or Wax Your Furniture Before the Monsoon
If your furniture uses an oil or hard wax finish (as many of our Bruinhout pieces do), the best time to apply a fresh coat is just before the monsoon begins — ideally in May or early June. A fresh oil treatment seals the wood's pores, creating a moisture barrier that significantly reduces swelling and warping. Use a food-safe or furniture-grade oil and apply with a soft cloth in circular motions, letting it soak in for 30 minutes before buffing off the excess.
Our Foldable Wall Mounted Workstation and Welcome Planter Shelf both use natural oil finishes — a quick re-oil before the rains will keep them looking pristine all season.
4. Use Silica Gel Packets Near Furniture
A simple and highly effective trick: place silica gel packets (available at any stationery or hardware store) inside drawers, cabinets, and on shelves near wooden furniture. Silica gel absorbs ambient moisture from the air, significantly reducing the humidity level immediately around your furniture. Replace the packets every 2–3 weeks during peak monsoon months.
5. Clean Spills and Condensation Immediately
During monsoon, even the bottom of a cold glass can leave a moisture ring on a wood surface. Always use coasters, and wipe up any spills or condensation immediately with a dry cloth. Do not let moisture sit on the surface for more than a few minutes. For furniture that sees heavy use — like our Regal Game Table — consider a felt or cork mat for everyday use during the monsoon months.
6. Watch for Early Signs of Warping or Swelling
Check your furniture regularly during the monsoon for signs of stress: drawers that suddenly stick, doors that do not close properly, or visible gaps appearing in joints. These are early signs of moisture absorption and swelling. If caught early, moving the piece to a drier spot and applying oil can reverse the process. Left unaddressed, warping can become permanent.
7. For Wall-Mounted Pieces, Check Your Fixings
If you have wall-mounted furniture — like our Wingspan Harmony Guitar Stand or Corner Shelf — check that the wall fixings remain secure after heavy rain. Damp walls can sometimes loosen screws and anchors, particularly in older buildings. A quick check at the start of the season can prevent accidents.
